Research in Flow Record Data (NetFlow) Adoption and Priorities for Network and Security Monitoring

In May 2011, Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) and Lancope conducted primary research with 100 + IT professionals regarding the usage, priorities, and practices surrounding network-based flow data records, such as NetFlow, sFlow, jFlow, IPFIX, and others, generally referred to as “Flow Record Data.”  The results of this study clearly show that flow record data has become an important, mainstream source for network management and network security efforts.

While traffic monitoring (76%) and security monitoring (61%) are the most popular current uses of flow record data overall, nearly half of respondents also reported using flow data for under-standing services consumption (47%) and planning/engineering (46%).

Flow Record Data (NetFlow, sFlow, jFlow) is also fast emerging as the cost-effective means (sometimes showing up to 15 times cost reductions) to obtain end-to-end visibility for vastly improved network troubleshooting and incident response. In that regard, the survey results indicate that flow record data has become an important, mainstream source for network management and security efforts, with even further adoption on the horizon. Moreover, flow data is being used to improve troubleshooting, capacity planning, forensic investigations, compliance, and more.
