Research Board Security ReportMembers are also starting to examine network flow data (including the source and destination IP addresses as well as the port used by every packet passing through our routers and switches) for signs of trouble. Lancope's StealthWatch, for instance, can help members get a better feel for what "normal" activity looks like by creating a "behavioral baseline" for each host on the network, detailing things like typical data transfer amounts, what the host normally connects to, and what services run on it. Statistical analysis is then used to help analysts spot "interesting" activity that may be worthy of a further look. (The tool leverages the ubiquitous NetFlow protocol, which is built into all Cisco, Brocade, and HP networking gear.) This approach allows Lancope customers to identify quiet yet potentially dangerous behavior such as a server acting as a client from time to time, or data flowing from an area of high privilege to an area of low privilege on the network. |
