Lancope Supplies OfficeMax® with Cost Effective Internal Network SecurityOffice Supply Giant Deploys Best-of-Breed StealthWatch System with ISS Proventia® ATLANTA, FEBRUARY 13, 2006 - Lancope, Inc., the pioneer and market leader in network behavior analysis (NBA) and response solutions with the most enterprise customers, today announced that OfficeMax® (NYSE: OMX), a leader in both business-to-business and retail office products distribution, deployed Lancope’s award-winning StealthWatch System for cost-effective identification and remediation of worms, viruses, spyware and other malicious activity across the internal enterprise network. To maintain the integrity of its extensive and complex network, OfficeMax selected StealthWatch for its scalable security monitoring, actionable contextual network and host intelligence, efficient network troubleshooting and minimal administrative requirements. OfficeMax first looked at StealthWatch when we were migrating from an outsourced intrusion detection system (IDS) to an insourced arrangement, said Diane Brown, IT security manager with OfficeMax. During our evaluations, we saw the benefits of using a network behavior anomaly detection solution in conjunction with a pattern-matching system to protect the network core and perimeter. As a result, we layered our security infrastructure by deploying Lancope’s StealthWatch System with Internet Security Systems® (ISS) Proventia® intrusion prevention system. She added, OfficeMax directs all ISS Proventia events to the StealthWatch Management Console. The clear advantage of this integration is that it provides us with a greater contextual view of a malicious system. Prior to deploying StealthWatch, OfficeMax’s security team relied heavily on network sniffing capabilities provided by the network team, said Keith Weisman, senior security engineer for OfficeMax. The security team is now much better positioned to deal with active threats. StealthWatch is an incredibly accurate solution and provides valuable contextual information about network activity. As a high-profile brand and the nation’s third largest office supply distributor, OfficeMax can be the target of potentially debilitating threats, such as zero-day and phishing attacks. Despite significant investment in perimeter-based security solutions, attacks continued to bypass and infect internal networks. With over 40,000 associates and almost 1,000 superstores, OfficeMax needed a quality network behavior anomaly detection monitoring system to identify and fix all types of network threats. Weisman asserted, OfficeMax believes strongly in the value of network behavior anomaly detection solutions, like StealthWatch, to identify, quarantine and remediate network threats. StealthWatch gives us a fairly compelling story to tell with respect to audit and external client reviews. OfficeMax, like many enterprise organizations, recognizes StealthWatch as a best-of-breed network behavior anomaly detection solution, said Harland LaVigne, president and CEO of Lancope. Increasingly, enterprises are choosing to deploy StealthWatch as an additional layer of protection against internal misuse and the known and unknown threats that circumvent traditional perimeter-based security.
