Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam Selects StealthWatch by Lancope for Network Visibility

StealthWatch Network Behavior Analysis Leverages sFlow to Monitor and Protect Internal Network

ATLANTA, March 13, 2007— Lancope, Inc., the leading provider of the StealthWatch™ System, the most widely used network behavior analysis (NBA) and response solution, today announced that Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam (GLR), a leading institution in the Netherlands that offers courses in graphic design, management and information & communication technologies (ICT), has selected StealthWatch for powerful network performance monitoring and behaviour-based anomaly detection.  Deployed at key sites throughout the network, StealthWatch leverages sFlow provided by the organisation’s Foundry network infrastructure to provide network visibility across 3,000 ports in three campus locations.

As an educational institution, GLR must maintain an open and dynamic network.  “The best way to protect this environment and maintain high availability is to have a clear view of what is happening on the network,” said Mark Pleunes, network manager for GLR.  “Only when we have evidence of unwanted behavior, can we take action against person(s) responsible for the unwanted behaviour.  That is where NBA fits into the picture and delivers the greatest value.”

According to Pleunes, “NBA is the only way to monitor your network.  The time of using a mirror port with a packet analyzer or other types of analyzing with lots of nodes across the network is over.  StealthWatch is an NBA solution that excels at providing information/evidence based on statistical information and not on the actual data that went over the wire.”

“We selected StealthWatch because of the strong partnership between Foundry Networks and Lancope,” said Pleunes.  “By leveraging sFlow data from our Foundry routers and switches, StealthWatch offers tremendous visibility into the network core, generates valuable network performance reports and performs automated actions on network devices.”

Unlike some technologies, StealthWatch uses flow information to provide superior network monitoring and protection without requiring massive investments in new hardware or software.  This approach significantly lowers the cost of monitoring and protecting the network.

Pleunes added, “What I like best about StealthWatch is the visibility into network traffic that it provides and the ability to perform automated actions if the traffic meets certain criteria. The Worm Tracker feature demonstrates StealthWatch’s ability to detect a worm even without knowing its signatures.”

Prior to deploying StealthWatch, Pleunes and his team reacted to only “noticeable problems on the network” and made “conclusions made based on log files,” which was both time-consuming and tedious. “With StealthWatch we can be more productive with our networking team,” he specified.  “Time previously spent looking at log files of other symptoms is now being automated by StealthWatch.  Not only does StealthWatch do a better job at it then we can, but also it is on duty 24/7”

“Universities and research institutions have unique network security requirements compared to most commercial businesses,” said Harland LaVigne, president and CEO of Lancope. “StealthWatch’s ability to provide cost-effective detection and response to malicious activity across massive network environments with a range of hardware and software platforms makes it an ideal solution for the higher education market.  GLR joins dozens of premier academic institutions worldwide, including University of Nottingham, Stanford University and Northwestern University, in deploying StealthWatch.”
