Austria’s Largest Hospital Selects Lancope’s StealthWatch Network Behavior Analysis Solution Which Utilizes NetFlow to Secure and Monitor Its Complex Network

~AKH Vienna General Hospital Deploys Non-intrusive StealthWatch for End-to-End Network Visibility~

ATLANTA, May 22, 2007 — Lancope, Inc., the provider of the StealthWatch™ System, the most widely used Network Behavior Analysis (NBA) and response solution, today announced that AKH Vienna General Hospital has deployed the StealthWatch System, which leverages NetFlow from the organization’s Cisco network infrastructure, to protect its complex and demanding network from internal and external threats. StealthWatch collects and analyzes natively available NetFlow, without deploying additional probes or appliances, to provide end-to-end network visibility and actionable intelligence that enables both security and network operations to ensure security, performance and availability of the enterprise network.

With more than 2,200 beds and 9,000 staff members, Vienna General is the largest hospital in Austria and one of the largest in Europe. Deployed in a secure virtual LAN in the core routing area of the hospital’s network, StealthWatch is used primarily by the hospital’s IT security team to detect and mitigate threats. Simultaneously, StealthWatch serves as a powerful resource for both network operations and desktop/server teams seeking to enhance performance and ensure availability.

“StealthWatch vigilantly watches our network traffic and alerts us to anything unwanted or unexpected so that we can take action quickly,” said Oliver Morais, security engineer for AKH Vienna General Hospital. “With our network organized into different zones and sub-zones, StealthWatch’s intuitive GUI makes it easy to spot exactly where and when something is happening on the network in real-time.”

StealthWatch’s network behavior analysis technology provides visibility, insight and protection for some of the most important aspects of Vienna General’s IT environment, including its own hospital information system (Krankenhaus-Informations System, or KIS) and Laboratory Information System (LIS). The KIS manages patient administration, patient data storage and a picture archiving system while the LIS processes 8,000 patient samples per day, returning 80,000 results per day and 20 million results per year. As another mission-critical endeavor, StealthWatch protects Vienna General’s SAP installation, which supports all business systems and internal ordering. StealthWatch is also used to monitor network traffic for anomalous behavior on the hospital’s disk storage solution.

“Before StealthWatch, we had to manually correlate firewall logs, Cisco logs and some of our server logs with different scripts to identify abnormal behavior,” said Morais. “The tedious and time consuming process was not practical and we are thrilled to now have StealthWatch in place, automatically scanning our NetFlow data. StealthWatch solved our primary concern, which was finding a non-intrusive security solution that would provide a detailed view of our network traffic and we are extremely happy with our decision.”

“Large hospitals maintain extremely complex networks with demanding IT security needs,” said Harland LaVigne, president and CEO of Lancope. “We are delighted that Vienna General relies on StealthWatch’s industry-leading NetFlow monitoring and security analysis to provide the network visibility and contextual awareness required to cost-effectively and immediately identify and resolve network incidents.”

The leading provider of NBA solutions to global enterprises, Lancope also demonstrates clear success in the healthcare market as validated by numerous customers, including Cancer Research UK, Aurora HealthCare and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, which have deployed StealthWatch to defeat zero-day worms, internal network misuse and other anomalies that compromise network integrity.

About AKH Vienna General Hospital

Vienna General Hospital (known locally as Allgemeines Krankenhaus Wien, or simply AKH) is the teaching hospital of the Medical University of Vienna. Located on a central campus in the city's ninth district (Alsergrund), Vienna General was founded originally in 1784 by order of Emperor Joseph II to replace a large workhouse for the poor. As new methods of medical diagnosis and treatment emerged over the decades, annexes were built to cater to the hospital's expansion. In 1957, a decision was taken to move the hospital into modern accommodations built for its actual purpose. Construction on the present site began in 1964, though realization of the entire hospital complex took another 30 years to complete, and a staggering 45 billion Austrian schillings (US$3.5 billion). The 2,200-bed institution opened officially in 1994 and is currently cited as the largest hospital in Austria.
