StealthWatch Protects Internal Networks for Illinois Universities
Leading Network Anomaly Detection System Secures Large, Highly Trafficked Networks
ATLANTA, OCTOBER 18, 2005 - Lancope, Inc., the leading provider of Network Anomaly Detection Systems (NADS), today announced that Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University are the most recent academic institutions in the state of Illinois to deploy Lancope’s award-winning StealthWatch System for internal network security. These universities join the rapidly growing StealthWatch user group, which includes more than 20 of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions, such as Northwestern University, University of North Carolina, Stanford University School of Medicine and Dartmouth College.
According to Scott Genung, manager of Networking Systems for Illinois State University, “StealthWatch is an incredibly useful tool for blocking external reconnaissance traffic and locating compromised systems throughout our campus. In fact, StealthWatch detected two major systems that were exploited, a problem that was not seen with our current IPS devices.”
Genung added, “We needed to d efend against well-known attacks, like Blaster, Nachi, Gaobot, and Sasser, but discovered that IPS devices could only defend against known and documented threats and were ineffective against threats without signatures. Therefore, we looked to anomaly detection solutions, like StealthWatch, to fill this gap in our defense architecture.”
Similarly, Jason Richardson, manager of IT Security for Northern Illinois University, found SNORT sensors “neither robust nor discerning enough for our environment because they were only rule-based.” Instead, he turned to StealthWatch because “it could detect anomalous behavior and provided the most bang for the buck. StealthWatch represents the best use of limited dollars to see known and, more importantly, unknown threats.”
“Northern Illinois needed a secure appliance that could alert to most kinds of malicious traffic and that required no more than 30 minutes per day to manage,” said Richardson . “After tuning, StealthWatch required only 15 minutes a day to manage and did not demand signature-updates.”
“Lancope is pleased to welcome these two universities to the prestigious group of higher education institutions that are turning increasingly to StealthWatch for internal network security,” said Harland LaVigne, chairman, president and CEO of Lancope. “StealthWatch’s successful and cost effective approach in monitoring network activity, detecting and prioritizing anomalous behavior, and responding to attacks makes it an ideal internal security solution for large, highly trafficked networks.”
About StealthWatch System
The StealthWatch System, which includes StealthWatch NC for native flow capture, StealthWatch Xe for NetFlow, StealthWatch Xe for sFlow and StealthWatch Management Console, is the leading network anomaly detection system (NADS) that defends internal networks against zero-day attacks, internal misuse, and unnecessary network exposures. StealthWatch continuously monitors network behavior, detects anomalies, and isolates known and unknown threats. Expanding beyond the capabilities of traditional network security products, StealthWatch collects, categorizes and analyzes network traffic to create comprehensive security intelligence at both network and host levels. Providing a cost-effective, single point of reference for optimizing security and network operations, StealthWatch enables organizations to improve the network health and security posture of their networks.
