Cisco – a Trusted Brand, on and off the Field

Megan Burns

How do you know if a company is trustworthy and produces quality products, stands behind them, and provides ongoing support? First-hand experience with a brand and its products is the best way, but beyond that, it is important to look at their current customers and how the company helps them accomplish their mission.

Cisco has had the privilege of serving many different customers from major corporations to government institutions to small businesses. I spend my weekdays working for Cisco and selling Stealthwatch, I spend my weekends with the Army National Guard, where I specialize in communications using Cisco equipment. When I first joined the National Guard, I trained on Cisco products and have since learned to trust that they would operate effectively when we needed them.

I’m responsible for maintaining radio and data distribution systems, provide technical assistance for computer systems and local area networks that help operate the Tactical Operations Center (TOC).

Our S6 soldiers are tasked with providing communications support within the battalion. Together we support the battalion's TOC, which is a mobile headquarters that is deployed to maintain communications with soldiers on remote missions. It handles satellite communications, hand radios, GPS and more. It is a vital component that needs to be secure, reliable, and dependable and that’s why we use Cisco equipment.

Secure, reliable, and dependable communications is what we provide for our battalion's commanders. If we are successful at doing that, our battalion is successful. I believe this is also true for my Cisco customers and helping them become successful with their security using Stealthwatch and ISE.

My colleagues and I believe in Cisco’s mission so much that we volunteer for the Disaster Incident Response Team (DIRT), a group of trained Cisco volunteers worldwide who support Cisco Tactical Operations (TacOps) and can respond quickly during crises. TacOps set up highly secure communications on the ground during emergencies. As a Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mission, we render aid free of charge. Cisco gives back by enabling emergency communications for first responders and others using Cisco’s Emergency Response Vehicles and portable emergency communications outfitted with a 1.8-meter satellite dish, Cisco Unified IP Phones, Cisco TelePresence solution, and other options for Internet connectivity.

In its more than 30-year history, Cisco has proven that it can help organizations accomplish their most important missions. This is something I’ve experienced first-hand on numerous occasions, both during the week and on weekends. When something important needs to be accomplished – whether it is building a data center, securing your network, or deploying an advanced Tactical Operations Center – Cisco can help.

In Cisco Security, we take this reputation of trusted partner seriously. This is the driving force behind our mission to deliver security products and solutions that operate as part of an integrated architecture and in concert with your network infrastructure to provide the best security outcomes. In particular, Cisco Stealthwatch leverages your Cisco network to provide real-time situational awareness of network traffic, behavioral analysis, and advanced threat detection.

By collecting and analyzing NetFlow, Stealthwatch provides a complete view into all network traffic and users. This is critical for uncovering APTs, DDoS, malware, and insider threats. Stealthwatch extends visibility across the network – including in the data center and public cloud – to improve threat detection, incident response, network segmentation, and forensics. Stealthwatch works with other Cisco security technologies to turn your existing network into an always-on security sensor and enforcer to fill in gaps in your protection.

Again, customers are the best place to look to evaluate the effectiveness and trustworthiness of Cisco Stealthwatch. Not too long ago the CISO of Elavon helped create a testimonial video for Stealthwatch because he believes in the product and has proof that it helps secure his network.
